If you’re dreaming of an escape to the mountains that combines natural beauty, light hiking, and a touch of cinematic intrigue, Vall de Núria in Catalonia is your spot. With the added charm of a unique ride on the Cremallera train, this trip makes for an ideal weekend getaway. Here’s the rundown on how to make the most of your time in Vall de Núria, with a cozy stay in nearby Camprodon!

Getting There: The Cremallera Experience

To access Vall de Núria, the most popular choice is the Cremallera, a scenic rack railway that climbs up to the valley, giving you picturesque views of the Pyrenees along the way. The Cremallera ride costs about 40 euros for two people and offers a unique, tranquil journey up the mountain. If you’re a hiking enthusiast, you can either take the Cremallera up and hike down (approximately three hours) or hike up and then ride back down. For the ultimate workout, you can hike both ways, but be prepared for a challenge! The main hiking trail is relatively moderate, with some inclines but manageable for most with a bit of stamina. Good footwear is essential, as some parts of the trail are rocky.

Insider Tip: If your name is “Núria,” the Cremallera is free for you!

We chose to take the Cremallera up and hike our way down. The roughly three-hour descent is packed with natural wonders that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. Imagine crystal-clear waterfalls trickling down the rocks (perfect for cooling off and snapping a pic), charming wooden bridges crossing over babbling streams, and expansive views of the valley that’ll have you stopping to catch your breath—and we mean literally!

Between the rocks you can find breathtaking waterfalls and, with a bit of luck, a hidden Diego!

And be warned: the steep inclines mean your thighs are in for a workout. Expect them to politely remind you of this hike for the next week! But trust us, the workout is more than worth it for the views and memories. Check out our beginner’s guide to trekking to Everest base camp. Best Time to Visit

We visited in early autumn, which we found perfect for clear skies, mild temperatures, and the gorgeous colors of the season. Spring is also a great time to visit, with fresh blooms and fewer crowds. Summer can be a bit more bustling, and in winter, Vall de Núria turns into a snowy wonderland, perfect if you’re up for snow activities.

What to Do in Vall de Núria

Vall de Núria offers a range of activities, so you’re set whether you’re after relaxation or adventure:

  • Hiking: With trails suitable for all levels, including a beginner-friendly route, Vall de Núria is a paradise for hikers. This valley’s paths lead you past striking mountain landscapes, forests, and the Núria Lake.
  • Horseback Riding: For a different way to take in the sights, consider a scenic horseback ride. The horses can be found waiting for you at their stable close to the Hotel Vall de Núria.
  • Kayaking: Glide across the calm, clear waters of Núria Lake for a bit of fun on the water.
  • Film Location Sightseeing: An iconic scene from the Spanish crime thriller The Invisible Guest was filmed here—extra points if you’re a movie buff! Wander around and see if you can recognize the filming spots.

Worry not—this scenic getaway isn’t entirely in the wilderness. You’ll find a cafeteria serving up hot drinks and snacks, as well as clean restrooms. If you’re planning an extended stay, you can book a room right in Hotel Vall de Núria for an immersive mountain experience.

What to Bring

Make the most of your time outdoors with these essentials:

  • Good Footwear: Trails can be rocky, so sturdy shoes are a must. Check out these beginner-friendly hiking shoes, for example.
  • Snacks and Water: The hike is a few hours, so pack some fuel for the way. We brought some cashews, dates, and waffles. Hikers know that it’s going to taste like the best meal you’ve ever had, no matter what food you pack!
  • Layered Clothing: The temperature can change quickly in the mountains. Don’t underestimate how much you will sweat, especially when wearing a backpack. Make sure you don’t catch cold when hiking with a wet back and some potential wind coming your way.
  • Camera: Trust us, these views need to be remembered. Your phone camera is good, but try out the Canon EOS Rebel T7 if you’re interested in upping your game.

A Charming Stay in Camprodon

For our trip, we stayed in Camprodon, which was an absolute treat. This charming town has a welcoming, relaxed vibe, perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. Don’t miss out on the Can Prodon Bar/Cafeteria, where you’ll find some of the best hot chocolate around! Camprodon is also known for Birba biscuits , a local specialty that makes for a delicious snack or souvenir.

The stoney Pont Nou (new bridge) in Camprodon looks especially beautiful during sunset or at night.

We were lucky to also experience the annual cookie festival that weekend with loads of activities for the whole family like painting cookies or a romantic concert at night.

Taking a night walk while admiring the beautifully lit old bridge in the middle of the town was definitely one of our favorite autumnal activities this year.

Nearby Sights: Castellfollit de la Roca

If you’re renting a car (which we totally recommend), make time to drive over to Castellfollit de la Roca. This dramatic village perched on a volcanic cliff is a sight to behold, with sweeping views of the countryside that are worth every photo. It’s a quick trip from Camprodon and adds even more depth to your weekend getaway.

Restaurant Recommendations:

  • Be sure to visit Cala Paula for a lovely meal. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. The food and hospitality are top-notch.
  • For an extra romantic treat for couples, consider crossing the border to France to have dinner at the Bellavista restaurant. It was awarded with a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide.
